Highmark Provides Free Glasses and Dental Exam

Many thanks to Highmark, Davis Vision, United Concordia and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Vision Screening

This past June, 150 uninsured and under-insured kids had the opportunity to receive free vision and dental screenings at an exclusive Tickets for Kids® Charities event held at PNC Park. Each child was screened by Davis Vision and United Concordia doctors. Children needing follow up eye care received a voucher redeemable for a free pair of glasses, compliments of Davis Vision and those needing dental care received a voucher for a dental visit from United Concordia. After their screenings, everyone received a Pirates goodie bag including a Pirates jersey, a Mrs. T's Oliver Onion doll, and enjoyed a night jam packed with fun things to do. The festivities included playing games to win Pirates tickets and merchandise, creating extravagant balloon animals, making posters to cheer on the Bucs, and, of course, plenty of good food! Even the Pirate Parrot came in to say hello. Kids, parents and chaperones then attended the Pirates game for the perfect finishing touch.

Many thanks to Highmark, Concordia, Davis Vision, and the Pittsburgh Pirates for their effort to promote healthy smiles and healthy eyes among underserved children in the Pittsburgh community!

A Celebration of Reading 2009

A Celebration of Reading, a teen literacy program, included over 300 students who had the opportunity to see Ellen Raskin's Newbery Medal-winning book, The Westing Game, come to life.

Participants were given a copy of the book and read it under guidance of their agency. They were then encouraged to express their personal interpretations of the book through creative group projects.

This May, the program culminated as youth, families, and chaperones attended a private performance of The Westing Game at the New Hazlett Theater. That night participants displayed their projects, received recognition and certificates of completion, and enjoyed a reception together.

Moments matter.
